Part of winning Texas’ Next Top Designer allowed me to go on an amazing trip to see fashion in the Big Apple! I’ve been to NYC multiple times, but there is definitely a different vibe during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Everyone looks like they stepped out of the latest edition of Vogue with fashion editors, celebs, buyers, and bloggers galore!

The majority of shows are held at Lincoln Center but there are some other venues such as Milk Studios, where smaller shows are also held. I attended a whirlwind of runway shows and was impressed with the amount of creativity and the distinct point of view of each designer. Besides the runway shows, I especially loved seeing the presentations which allowed the audience to gain a closer, more intimate, and longer look at the new designs. Some of my favorites were the furs and layering of Brandon Sun, Rachel Roy’s clean color blocking, Rebecca Minkoff with a suprise musical performance by Theophilus London, and L.A.M.B.’s European school girl chic.

I definitely regret not having my DSLR camera with me, i.e. a fast shutter and a low light lens. But, here are some of the pics I came home with..

AFW Mashup Team Industry Choice Winning Photograph

One of the things that I participated in during this past Austin Fashion Week 2011 was completing a look with a mash up team – meaning I was paired up with a clothing designer, photographer, model, makeup artist, and a hair stylist at random.  We were then asked to complete a stylized look to be photographed by our assigned photographer and our photo was then judged and voted upon.

I must say that having a shoot in the dead of summer is quite a challenge in itself. But it was great working with some other Austin locals in the fashion industry. And, not to mention that we did end up picking up the win for the industry choice by Timothy White.

Austin Fashion has definitely come a long way. Besides the common sighting of techies in their t-shirt and flip flops, more and more Austinites are embracing fashion and their individual sense of style. This year, we held an official Austin Fashion Week Showcase Event at Underwear which is a darling little lingerie shop on West 12th Street.

Sweet Pop provided the beautiful cookies inspired by the Abigail Earrings and Necklace, cake pops, and cupcakes. Peter Tung provided his wonderful photography skills in a delightful photobooth. Wanderlust Ice Cream provided refreshing ice cream and sorbet tastings. And, Inglenook Decor donated a generous gift certificate and jewelry holder to the raffle. And, lastly, a huge thank you to Austin K-EYE and Bettie Cross for featuring our event on their Austin Live news segment.

Caroline Andrieu captures a very ethereal beauty and emotion in her fashion illustrations. I love the artistic realism that she is able to portray. She is currently the art director of Condé Nast digital’s department
for its Vogue and GQ websites and resides in Paris, France.

Flora Mascolo, the wife of the late founder and current CEO of Toni & Guy was kind enough to host the Texas’ Next Top Designer and Grande Luxe Magazine photoshoot at her gorgeous mansion in Dallas, TX. The house and grounds were absolutely amazing…from the peacocks outside to the amazing furnishings.

The last shoot of the day was an underwater photo shoot with photographer Jeremy McKane. His underwater shots are really stunning.

Loving the Back!

All the looks are divine.

This collection is absolutely exquisite.  I love the detailing, texture, and the contrast of sheer and opaque fabrics. The beading, fringe, and tulle are absolutely breathtaking and perfectly romantic.

This was an amazing experience and I am truly honored to have been chosen among such great designers from all over Texas!

The competition consisted of a written presentation, business plan, and a  presentation in front of a distinguished panel of judges from the Texas fashion industry (who are all volunteering their own time to further fashion in Texas). It’s held annually in Dallas, TX and I highly encourage Texas designers to apply next year.

Although, it may a bit unnerving, I encourage everyone to step out of their comfort zone once in a while whether that be entering a competition or presenting your ideas to a complete stranger. You never know what will come out of it!

My newest jewelry styles are pieces of actual lace that have been cast into sterling silver and or gold plated metal. The way the metal has captured the detailing and texture is exquisite.

Geoffrey Henning, Designer and VP of Style at JC Penney, was awarded with the Career Achievement Award, and Varela + Brooks was awarded the runner-up.
